5 April 2012 Gretchen

5 April, 2012. Pebbles had surgery and is sleeping at Bahamas Humane Society in Nassau. 

Gretchen the horse has almost lost her winter (!) coat, which is a good thing since tomorrow may be 87 degrees… Every afternoon she turns the back doorknob to get her cereal. Later she turns the doorknob to remind me it’s time for her evening “exfoliation treatment”… rubbing and scraping. One more reminder for her carrot treats.  All quiet till about 9 pm when she is back again. Then it’s time for her nighttime cereal and hay and relocation outside the fence till morning. Gretchen likes Princess the dog, but Princess doesn’t like anyone or any horse very close.  I don’t know much about horses, but I think Gretchen looks pretty good and shiny for over 35 years old.  She is not in the mood for photos, so ears back.  Please excuse the mess…

Pebbles

4 April, 2012..Started the day dropping off dog food, worming medicine for a dog in the North, and Tshirts. Tshirts!! Do you have a Cat Island Humane Society Tshirt? Looking good and many colors now. Best selection is at Shanna’s Cove Resort. 

Heard both goats are a little better today. J Dropped off heartworm treatment #3 for a dog in Old Bight. The owner is now comfortable with administering the tablets and injection.  This afternoon Pebbles (pic) came from Port Howe for her trip on the Mailboat to Nassau.  Her kennel is huge, XXL, so very spacious ride. More dog food picked up at Mailboat, and distributed one bag at dock. 

So far this blog only accounts for the activities of one volunteer. Other members are just as busy assisting creatures.

Can you imagine what we could do if we had employees?

3 April, 2012… GOATS! A man from Smith’s Bay reported a goat in his area is unable to move her back legs. She has 2 kids and eats and drinks but cannot use back legs at all. For 6 days. Call to Dr. Pedro Davis who suggested a treatment.  Dr. Davis is amazing… he always answers our calls. The goat’s neighbor will assist.  A woman overheard us talking and said her brother’s goat in New Bight cannot move at all and was carried back from the field.  Her kid died.  We will try the same treatment with her.  Mr. Moss picked up the giant kennel for Pebbles.  Saw Pebbles and her person down at Port Howe and she is ready for her trip!   

Mosquitoes have hatched. Two trios of birds migrating north. Plenty white crowned pigeons in Greenwood enjoying gem elemi berries.

2 April, 2012

2 April… call for assistance to send Pebbles, a dog from Port Howe, to Nassau to be spayed. Securing kennel for transport on the Mail Boat.  Bahamas Humane Society will be asked to pick up dog from dock and perform surgery.  Dog food supplied until Mail Boat arrives, to couple that adopted two brothers.  One dog was a police rescue, one recently abandoned.  Order made for dog food in Nassau.  Snobelle still missing. 

On to Andrew Seymour’s for the evening feeding… goats, chickens, dogs, cats.  Fresh eggs in my plait hat! Honestly, you feel the energy eating fresh eggs. Goat kid, the runt of the herd (pic above) found to have lice and will be treated. Others look fine.

Welcome to the Cat Island Humane Society blog!  To give our friends and supporters an idea of what we do on Cat Island… 1 April, 2011… While at the New Bight airport to see off supporter Andrew Jones, we were informed that two puppies had been abandoned in the bush beyond Devil’s Point. A man rescued them, and the rescuer knew where they originated.  Andrew Seymour (our VP) knew the original owner had left the puppies in the care of others.  It is against the law to abandon animals.  Andrew Seymour will follow up on the case.
